Salvation Army Scouters and Guiders Conference 2007

This weekend, Scouters and Guiders from around the UK met in Sunbury to have their annual Conference weekend.

Sessions were held on aspects of Salvation Army and Scouting History, training and worship.

Notes from the Scouters Training Sessions

On the Saturday, the Scouters took part in some sessions led by Melissa Green, the Adult Training Manager for the Scout Association. During the sessions, some resources were mentioned and some programme ideas produced by the group. Here are some notes that might be useful

Cultural Evening

  • Any Age Group (Particularly Scouts upwards)
  • Bring in food, items from their own culture to share with others

Working With Blind

  • Suitable for all ages
  • Get RNIB to come and do a talk to young people
  • Works well

Disability Awareness

  • Scouts
  • Try an activity (for Example, make a drink, Tent pitching)
  • Try same activity with a disability (ie, deaf, bling, in a wheelchair)
  • Discuss how people felt about their disability (excluded, frustrated, etc.)
  • Equipment
    • Blindfold (simulating blindness)
    • iPod (simulating deafness)
    • wheelchair
    • Tent, Drink making facilities

Big Party

  • Beavers, Cubs, Scouts
  • Have a big party for all sections
  • They run evening
  • Each section has something to do
  • Invite Friends

School Assembly

  • Beavers
  • Assembly in School where you already have Beavers
  • Beavers are allowed to wear their uniform
  • Do an activity related to the programme
  • Also ask to run an activity as a Colony at the local School fete

Other Ideas

  • Bring a friend night
  • Participate at local fund raising event
  • Taster Evening – adventurous activity

Programme Ideas (For Raising Awareness/Recuriting Adults)

Fire Safety Badge

  • Scouts
  • Visit Fire station
  • Try and recurit new leaders

Open Evening (Not AGM Night)

  • Group
  • Beaver Scout Presentations (Eager Beaver, Smart Beaver, Most Helpful Beaver, Church Parade Beaver, Beaver of the Year)
  • Cub Scout Presentations (Six of the Year, Cub of the Year, Most Helpful Cub)
  • Scouts (Scout of the Year)
  • Displays of work
  • Working Displays/Demonstrations

Fitness

  • Cubs and Scouts
  • Run over 4 weeks
  • Setup fitness stations (Skipping, Pressups, Star Jumps, etc)
  • Time for 1min, record results
  • Compare results over each week
  • Visit a Gym
  • Have a healthy eating evening

Library Display

  • Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers
  • Beavers and Cubs make posters about waht they do
  • Display in a local Library
  • Scout/Explorers staff stand and provide craft/skills activity for Beaver and Cub age group

Public Abseil

  • Scouts and Explorers
  • Public Abseil in town centre
  • Would need insurance and a tower certificate
  • All instructors to be qualified

Displays

  • Provide displays and exhibitions at Local Gala and School Fete

Public Pack Night

  • Cubs
  • Take Cubs to local shopping centre
  • Run a quiz or a Treasure Hunt
  • Have display to explain what they’re doing and how to join

Public Fund raising

  • Group
  • Car Wash
  • Bag packing clearly indicating where collected monies are to be used
  • Community Coffee morning
